The second edition of this scarce two-volume work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the front board. Previous owner's bookplate to the front paste down to each volume. Previous owner's ink inscription to the half title page of Volume I.Illustrated with forty-five plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated, complete.Eustace Clare Grenville Murray (1824-1881) was one of the most accomplished journalists of his day, contributing to the Pall Mall Gazette, the Cornhill Magazine, Vanity Fair, and many other well-known publications.In this profusely illustrated work, Murray offers amusing character sketches of the spendthrifts, jilts, public school boys and undergraduates, M.P.s, and adventurers of Victorian Britain. A rarely seen work.A twenty-page publisher's catalogue to the rear. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, though a little bumped to the extremities. Spine is slightly cocked. Frontispiece, title page, and pages i-x are coming loose of Volume I, but remain intact. Pages 9 to 24, and pages 299 to 310, are coming loose to Volume II, but remain intact. Binding is slightly strained between pages 124 and 125 of Volume I and between pages 264 and 265 of Volume II. Otherwise, internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot, more so to the first and last few pages. Good.
