Synopsis: A collection of two original fables and a retelling of an Eastern European folktale includes "Under the Moon," in which an old woman cleans the cobwebs from the sky, as well as "The Apple Child" and a new version of "Little Ivan."
From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-4-A collection of three short stories. "Under the Moon" is the tale behind the nursery rhyme, "There was an old lady tossed up in a basket/seventeen times as high as the moon." Once the compulsive cleaner has exhausted all household opportunities to polish and dust, she is approached by the unnamed man-in-the-moon to get the cobwebs out of the sky, which she does. "Little Ivan" doesn't listen to Grandmother and is taken away by Old Mother Wolf. Grandmother is no fool, however; she rescues him and sends him to school so that if ever the old wolf comes back to the forest to sing her songs, there will be no child to carry away. A poor boy's luck changes when he makes friends with "The Apple Child," a sprite sprung from burning applewood. The greed of an old neighbor, plus the evil doings of her elderwood bogle, provide a chance for the Apple Child to show his tricky nature. The stories read aloud smoothly, with enough playful language and dialogue to amuse both tellers and listeners. Children are likely to respond to the folktalelike resonances in plot, character, setting, and pattern. Fisher's black-line drawings are frequent enough to hold the interest of younger readers.
