About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Bottoms, David

From Library Journal:

These poems of Georgia country life by the 1979 Walt Whitman Award winner are highly accessible. The merciful vultures of the title poem and a horse caught in a frozen pond, "half a white statue in a fountain of ice," are indeed memorable, and Bottoms grapples effectively with the dead that "stare fish-blind into the lights of hospitals" or, like his father, hauntingly await doom in World War II photographs. But most poems are told in a first-person narrative that becomes wearing, as the poet doesn't quite manage to be the vehicle for universality such a voice demands. The story-telling and the focus on our struggle with nature will appeal to some, but readers hungry for rich language and deep insights may be disappointed.
