About this Item

Lovell's Library no. 173. Decorative wraps, LACKING rear wrap. 257pp. An account of the lives and actions of various Russian revolutionaries including Jacob Stefanovic, Demetrius Clemens, Valerian Ossinsky, Vera Zassulic, Sophia Perovskaia, etc., as well as a look at various attempts at revolution against the Tsarist Russian government. Stepniak examines the underground press in Russia, as well as examining propaganda and the rise and use of terrorism. This mention of terrorism is an early discussion of the use of violent acts to achieve political change, offering an example of how terrorism evolved in Russia. Stepniak, Sergey Stepnyack-Kravchinky, a Russian revolutionary, was exiled several times, writing a manual on guerrilla warfare as well as editing an underground revolutionary journal. He eventually assassinated Nikolai Mezenstov, head of Russia's secret police (Wikipedia). FAIR condition, LACKING the rear wrap. Small area of staining to the front wrap, with scattered soiling and a few other minor stains. Moderate browning to the wraps. Extremities scuffed and worn, with a few small tears and chips.
