Paper Covered Boards. Very Good/Fair. First Edition. 12mo - over 6_" - 7_" tall. The New Poetry Series, No. 8. 54 p. At age 22 in 1939 Norse became a member of W.H. Auden's inner circle. William Carlos Williams called him 'the best poet of your generation'. In 1974, City Lights published Norse's Hotel Nirvana: Selected Poems, establishing him among the leading Beat poets. He was nominated for the 1974 National Book Award. Norse lived in the 'Beat Hotel' in Paris, 1960-63, with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso. There he wrote his emperimental cut-up novel, Beat Hotel. With Carnivorous Saint: Gay Poems 1941-1976, Norse became the leading gay liberation poet. This is Norse's first book. A bit of foxing along edges as well as the endpapers. Previous owner's signature, in ink, on the FFEP. DJ is chipped and worn, particularly along top edge with repairs in scotch tape. Book Description Denver: Alan Swallow, 1953, 1953. Octavo. Original grey boards, front board lettered in black. With the dust jacket. Spine head and tips slightly bumped. An excellent copy in the bright dust jacket, spine end slightly creased, a small mark to front panel. First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed by the poet, "May 1, 1953 For Howard, With love, Harold". This copy has an appropriate later association for the gay poet's first collection, with the ownership inscription, "Winston Leyland, His Copy". Leyland (b.1940) was a leading figure in American LGBT publishing who won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era.
