About this title

Synopsis:

If Christian theology is to be taken seriously as an enterprise of 'faith in search of understanding', it must come to terms with the fact that its doctrines have developed in history. Although there have been intimations of this fact before, it may safely be said that the full scope of the issue did not become visible to theologians, whether Protestant or Roman Catholic, until the nineteenth century. It is above all John Henry Newman's And Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, first published in 1845, that thrust the development of doctrine into the centre of theological concern, where it still is. As the author of the book on Newman the Theologian (whose French title was Newman, Le Developpement de Dogme), Father Wall grave has special qualifications to undertake this difficult assignment.... The author summarizes the 'development of development' in the century and a quarter since Newman's essay, and he outlines the chief options made available by that development. --- from book's General Editor's Foreword
