About this title

Although the fields of modern electronics are vast, these is a common denominator of basic laws and principles that threads these seemingly diverse areas; these general concepts are necessarily invoked as the basis for understanding the circuits, devices, and systems encountered in any specialized field. These general concepts also serve to acquaint the student with the unity that prevails throughout the sciences of electricity and electronics. Teaching methods are subject to progressive improvement, and this textbook is the outcome of extensive academic experience. For example, it has been established that students gain confidence in AC circuit analysis rapidly when algebraic analysis is supplemented by graphical analysis. The author has stressed the conceptual approach, not only to provide a broad foundation of understanding, but also to facilitate transfer of training by the student. This conceptual approach entails intuitive discussion to serve as a point of entry for the beginning student, and analytic treatment that provides ample rigor at this level of instruction. Coverage of "hardware" has been minimized; but it has not been ignored completely, inasmuch as the objective aspect of electronics makes its contribution to the overall perspective of the subject.
