The city, its institutions, leaders, and citizens during the Civil War and as the seat of command of the Union's "Department of the West." First three chapters are on the history St. Louis and Missouri from territorial days to just before the conflict, including topics such as slavery, early settlers and notable settlement patterns, and the press. This is the original edition, not a modern reprint. 8vo. xiv, [2], 475, [1] pp.; 22 plts. Publisher's blue textured cloth, covers framed in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title; spine head lightly rubbed, upper edge of back cover with small dent, otherwise minor shelfwear only. Front hinge (inside) cracked, back hinge reinforced some time ago. Ex?social club library: paper shelving label on spine, call number on pastedown, pressure-stamp on title-page, no other markings.
