Orig. gilt-pictorial red morocco, A.e.g. Rebacked with spine laid down, light scattered foxing, else a very good copy. Sabin 25623, under "Franklin, J." Bennett, p.1: "Six full page colored plates, including good portraits of the President and Vice President." The six plates are: President Polk, Vice President Dallas, the Presidents of the U.S., the Senate, the House, the flag of the United States. There are two copies of all but those of Polk and Dallas. Tipped in is an autograph letter from Elias Lewis to Richard Rush, dated 1 December 1848. "My neighbor and friend has this evening expressed a desire to present to you a copy of his splendid United States Album, and also to present, through you, a copy of the same work to the first President of the new republic of France. I assured him that you could not be otherwise than gratified, .J. Franklin Reigart, the author, is an alderman of this city, distinguished for his talents and general intelligence. The work was got up by himself, with infinite care and skill." The front endpaper is inscribed, "From my Father's Library. Benjamin Rush, 1860. Presented to him while Minister to France, 1848." Richard Rush was the second son of Benjamin Rush, physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Richard Rush served as U.S. Attorney General under James Madison and Secretary of the Treasury under John Quincy Adams. He served as Minister to France under James Polk. Plates with facsimile signatures of the president, vice president, Supreme Court, Cabinet, members of the House and Senate, and other government officials. Inserted is an engraved portrait of Elias Lewis, autographed by Lewis, President of the 2nd Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Lewis later served as Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Rubbing to edges of boards. Rather heavy foxing. Unpaginated. Four colour plates. Contains the Arms of each State, facsimile signatures of the great and good of the USA in 1844 etc. Tipped-in on a blank page at the rear of the book is a hand-written poem entitled "To the Muse over the door of the Hall of the House of Representatives of the United States." This is hand-written and is signed John Quincy Adams with the date 30 June 1846. (I am not at all sure this is in Adams' hand-writing).
