About this Item

Bailliere Brothers, NY. This volume presents Auguste Laugel's travel observations in 1864-65. The most striking pages, to students of the war, are those devoted to an account of the elaborate fortifications which Grant s army had built in front of Richmond and Petersburg, and to the types of soldiers manning them. Laugel was an astute observer of the United States and a supporter of democracy. Originally published in Paris, this is the first English edition. There is much on ordinary America during the Civil War and a full chapter on Lincoln and the War itself. It is a good read providing a valuable insight into America through the eyes of this Frenchman. Very good, bright copy of the first edition. 313 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 15186
