8vo. Stiff brown wrappers. 24pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Fine. The First Annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture, named after this library's long-time second director -- American historian (1906-88), director of the Louis A. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum from 1956 to 1973 and author of more than 200 articles, pamphlets and books about Lincoln. Best of all, this copy belonged to the series' namesake: Laid in is a Typed Note Signed from the library's third director, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Mark E. Neely Jr. (born 1944). 1p, 8½" X 11", Fort Wayne, IN, 9 October 1978. "I enclose a copy of the R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture," he notes on library letterhead. "There are many more at the Museum, but I wanted you to see it right away." Signed simply "Mark" in black ink. Also enclosed is an envelope addressed by Neely to McMurtry, postally cancelled 27 April 1978, containing the printed invitation to attend Current's May 11th lecture at which he delivered this first McMurtry Lecture. An outstanding association copy. This notable series continued for many years and includes lectures by many top Lincoln scholars. Bookseller Inventory #
