Two articles of Civil War interest, including Israel Washburn's "The Logic and the End of the Rebellion" (pp. 5-24), in which Washburn traces the history of slavery through the nineteenth century, and I.C. Knowlton's "The Contraband" (pp. 307-322), in which Knowlton expands upon the artuments of W. E. Channing to make a moral argument against slavery. After retiring from the Senate, Washburn "(advocated) an amendment to the Constitution to abolish slavery, taking a radical stand against Andrew Johnson, and calling for black suffrage." - ANB The volume also includes a range of other articles relating to Universalism by various authors.
