About this title:

Synopsis: From the author of the Sunday Times bestseller 'Cocaine Nights' comes an acclaimed backlist title -- in which suburban London is transformed into an exotic dreamworld -- now reissued in new cover style. When a light aircraft crashes into the Thames at Shepperton, the young pilot who struggles to the surface minutes later seems to have come back from the dead. Within hours everything in the dormitory suburb is strangely transformed. Vultures invade the rooftops, luxuriant tropical vegetation overruns the quiet avenues, and the local inhabitants are propelled by the young man's urgent visions through ecstatic sexual celebrations towards an apocalyptic climax.

About the Author: J. G. Ballard was born in 1930 in Shanghai. After internment in a civilian prison camp, his family returned to England in 1946. His 1984 bestseller `Empire of the Sun' won the Guardian Fiction Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. His controversial novel `Crash' was made into a film by David Cronenberg. His autobiography `Miracles of Life' was published in 2008, and a collection of interviews with the author, `Extreme Metaphors', was published in 2012. J. G. Ballard passed away in 2009.

Book Description Holt Rinehart & Winston, 1979. hardcover. 1st edition. New York. 1979. November 1979. Holt Rinehart & Winston. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. ISBN: 0030524318. 238 pages. hardcover. Jacket painting by Carlos Ochagavia. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This brilliant novel represents both a departure and a culmination for J. G. Ballard, whom the critic Susan Sontag has described as ‘one of the most important, intelligent voices in contemporary fiction.’ Unlike nearly all of Ballard’s previous fiction, it presents a triumphant fable of transformation, a tale of exotic miracles - surreal and sensual - yet developed with such logic and consistency as to achieve a shining reality all its own. The time and place are contemporary England. A young social misfit who has been fascinated with flight but has never flown a plane steals a small aircraft from a London airport and crash-lands it in the Thames at the town of Shepperton, a commuter suburb-resort that is also the location of part of the British film industry. While there is some question as to whether he indeed survives the crash, whether what follows is ‘real’ or some kind of afterlife dream, he is nonetheless saved from drowning and befriended by a group of residents who witnessed his crash. He soon learns he has been anticipated - variously as messianic redeemer, object of prey, and personal menace - and in the days following his recovery he begins to assume certain supernatural powers that affect and involve him intimately, not only with his rescuers but with the whole town. And gradually he transforms the town: Tropical flora and wild animals appear and in time overwhelm the river resort; daily routine is disrupted with joyous pagan festivals; access into or escape from the town becomes impossible; sex is manifested openly and indiscriminately; and in their final climax of liberation the townspeople are taught to fly. With a power of imagery and depth of vision unique in modern fiction, J. G. Ballard has given us the most extraordinary novel of his distinguished and influential career. inventory #1141 Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. Seller Inventory # z1141
