About this Item

530-610pp. 236 x 147 mm. Original printed wrappers, a little soiled and creased, small chip in lower spine, signatures not sewn so that most of the leaves are loose. First Edition, Offprint Issue. See Garrison-Morton 730, citing the 3-volume collected papers published under the same title (1906-23). Fischer, recipient of the 1902 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his syntheses in the sugar and purine groups, "laid the chemical foundations for biochemistry by his study of sugars, enzymes, purines and proteins" (DSB). In 1899 Fischer began investigating the chemical nature of proteins. In the course of his research he discovered new amino acids, synthesized several of them, introduced the terms "peptide" and "polypeptide," and "suggested that the peptide linkage-CONH-was repeated in long chains in the polypeptide molecule" (DSB). In embarking on his synthetic program in the protein field, Fischer realized that, as in the nineteenth-century development about structure of organic molecules such as the fats and carbohydrates, one had to establish, by quantitative analysis, the complete unitary composition of well-defined proteins (in this case, of the amino acids). When Fischer began his work on proteins, about a dozen amino acids were known to be products of acid hydrolysis. By 1906, when Fischer presented a summary of the progress made in his laboratory, he had added to the list valine, proline, hydroxyproline (Fruton, Proteins, Enzymes, Genes, p. 189).
