The high point of Willstatter's chemical work was attained during 1905-1914, in his studies on chlorophyll and the anthocyanins. This is one in a series of publications in which Willstatter and Stoll sought to explain photosynthesis. Willstatter, noted for his work in organic chemistry, especially on alkaloids, chlorophyll, anthocyanins, and enzymes. Willstatter was awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize "for his pioneer researches on plant pigments, especially chlorophyll." Nobel, the man and his prizes.
