About this Item

Illustration. 1 p. 8? W x 10? H. Single sheet mounted at corner of folder with mat and ruling on face. Scrooge's former partner, long deceased, was Jacob Marley. In "A Christmas Carol", Marley returns to haunt Scrooge with the errors of both their ways. This is an original watercolor by Joseph Clayton Clarke (1857-1937), known as "Kyd". He was prolific, skilled and effective illustrator and watercolorist, specializing in Charles Dickens's characters. The first publication of Kyd's illustrations appeared in Fleet Street Magazine" in 1887. His numerous images, frequently reproduced (including in the series of cigarette cards published for Player's cigarettes in 1912-25) have set much of the public's conception of Dickens's characters. Kyd was also known for his fore-edge painting of characters from Dickens. This image is one of the most uncommon. The watermark is "Whatman / 1885". One tiny spot of foxing, not in the primary image. Some toning at edges, not involving the image. Overall a Very Good example of a rare item in Kyd's oeuvre. Bookseller Inventory # 11455
