Title: Untitled photograph of hands, lightly signed...
Publisher: Circa 1950
Publication Date: 1950
Vintage silver print, 13 x 9.5 inches; archivally matted and framed under UV-resistant glass. Lovely example of the photographer's so-called "photogenics" -- images made in the darkroom without a camera. Jacobi started creating these images about 1946; they represented a new and unexpected departure in her career. Her friend Edward Steichen valued these evocative and abstract works more than her more familiar portaits. At least part of the influence for the development of her photogenics came from Jacobi's friend, the painter and art historian Leo Katz, and from the experimental light modulations of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. See Beckers & Moortgat, Lotte Jacobi / Berlin / New York (Berlin: 1998), pp. 183-185. Additional shipping and handling costs assessed due to packing requirements and size. Please enquire.
