About this Item

14 page monograph, reproduced from typescript, 8.5 x 11", stapled, with this title and a note in ink initialled by the author stating that this is now out dated, since she has found more packs, and plans to use the material do produce three small books. Accompanied by the February 1966 issue of the UCLA Librarian with an illustrated article by Wayland on playing cards. She divides these early cards into three categories: educational (astronomical, geographical, heraldic, mathematical instruments), political (Reign of James II, Horrid Popish Plot), and pastime (fortune telling, musical, proverbs). An authority on playing cards, Virginia Wayland wrote a number of books and monographs on the subject in the 1960s and 1970s. Bookseller Inventory # 5703
