About this title

Synopsis:

User’s Guide to a Blank Wall is a collection of 64 poems by Thomas Scott, with French translation by Daniel Soha. They are organized in three sections with English occupying the first half of the book, translations following. The book is a thorough, intense slice of life filled with the rich colors of those coveted “moments worth stealing” that the poet is privileged to find under the “scabby shells” of the mundane and the inconspicuous, and exposes in all their secluded radiance: lovers, haters, dreamers, homebodies and the homeless are looking glasses that enhance both the eye of the beholder and the object beheld, beauty and its voyeur, the actor and his act. Scott’s poems are fleshly, sensual pieces whose texture “you can almost reach out and touch with your fingers”. The language is simple, direct and taut. The images are crisp. The tone is almost conversational, yet yields contained emotion or surges with lyricism. These are poems that do more than just challenge and intrigue: they embrace and seduce.

About the Author:

Thomas Scott was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in 1943. During his high school years The Canadian Forum published several of his poems. Despite the gratification of such recognition the allure of commerce proved irresistible. Scott moved to Toronto and after a stint at the CBC writing television shows, he joined a major Canadian advertising agency as a copywriter and moved through the ranks to become Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. After a hiatus of four decades Scott returned to his beginnings and now writes poetry full time. » (Jean Riley, Panorama, TFO)
