Description:

(Jackson, William Henry, photographer) VETA PASS, COLORADO STATION, SPECIAL DENVER & RIO GRANDE RAILWAY TRAIN, circa 1882. Imperial-sized albumen image on original mat. Photograph dimensions: 13-1/2 inches by 10 inches mounted on original cream-colored board; dimensions: 20 inches by 16 inches. Photograph exhibits excellent tones and detail. Photograph itself in near fine condition. Mat board missing small piece of lower left-hand corner. Image displays Engine #92 and coal of The Denver & Rio Grande Railway along with two porters. Engine #92 was occasionally used by William Henry Jackson and his entourage for the photographic tours commissioned by Jay Gould. After assuming leadership of The Denver & Rio Grande, Gould recalled William Henry Jackson¿s photographic work for the Union Pacific in 1869 and decided it mutually beneficial to have Jackson¿s remarkable images promote the railroad. Jackson was given the use of a special train to assist him during his photographic tours. Often, Jackson¿s wife, Emilie, along with his friend from the Hayden surveys, Thomas Moran, and journalist, Ernest Ingersoll, accompanied Jackson on these journeys. Rare W. H. Jackson imperial-sized image. Deep tones and strong contrasts. W. H. Jackson is considered one of the foremost pioneer glass-plate photographers of the American West. Bookseller Inventory # 000065
