Roma: Co' Tipi Della Civilta Cattolica, 1853, 4to (Circa 10-1/2" x 7-3/4"), 137 pages, steel engraved frontispiece. In contemporary (of the period) 1/4 calf over marbeled boards. A few internal monastery (now defunct) stamps, extremities rubbed, else clean, tight and very good. TEXT IN ITALIAN. This is the story of Giovanni de Britto (John de Britto), a Jesuit missionary from Portugal, who traveled first to the Portuguese Colony of Goa in India in 1675. He was martyred on 4 February 1693 in Oriyur, Tami Nadu, India and canonized on 22 June 1947. While in India, he learned Tamil and proceeded to live the life of a Sanyasi (Hindu Holy Man) dressing in robes and sandals, wearing a turban and carrying a copper pot to keep his once a day meal.
