Description:

SIGNED & INSCRIBED TWICE by the Australian artist, once in 1994 on half-title page, & once in 1998 on ffep. Both inscriptions in her unique & typical florid writing style, both in black ink. The inscription on half-title page reads: "For Alysia with love, and keep dreaming and dancing - Vali - 6th July 1994". The inscription on ffep reads: "For Caz, from Jonah and Vali - October 7th 1998 - Melbourne". Additionally, on page 125 Vali Myers has hand-written a phone number with the name "Gianni" underneath. Gianni was Vali's friend & lover; he is also referenced on page 50 in this book. Numerous full-colour illustrations and photographs throughout. Text by Vali Myers. Foreword by Ed van der Elsken. Introduction by George A. Plimpton. Includes short biographical detail, exhibitions list, photograph credits, plus full catalogue details (with each artpiece's title, year created, size, medium used, plus current owner). Vali Myers (1930-2003), Australian artist who specialized in fine pen & ink drawings. Born in Canterbury, Sydney. Vali was a flamboyant artist who divided her time between her adopted home of Melbourne, the Hotel Chelsea in New York City, & a 14th century cottage in her valley near il Porto (Positano), Italy. She was acquainted with Tennessee Williams, Salvador Dali, Django Reinhardt, Jean Cocteau, & Jean Genet, among many others. Vali Myers died in Melbourne after a short battle with cancer at the age of 72. From rear inner flap of dustjacket: "Vali Myers was born in 1930 in Sydney, Australia. Her mother, a New Zealander, was a violinist; her father, the son of cattle owners from Queensland, went to sea as a marine officer on the China run. As a child at a bushschool in the outback she neglected lessons preferring to draw in the back of exercise books visions from her imagination. Self-taught, her very personal technique evolved slowly over the years. Before leaving Australia for France in 1949 Vali had become leading dancer of the Melbourne Modern Ballet Company. On arriving in Paris, she became the subject of a book by Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken 'Love on the Left Bank'. Most of her beautiful black and white drawings were done during this period. Since 1958, Vali has lived in southern Italy, in the solitude of a great valley by the coast, with a hundred animals. Her time has been dedicated to them, and to her work". Bound in original red cloth with bright gilt lettering to front board & spine, in publisher's original unclipped pictorial dustjacket. A very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 127pp. Scarce volume, RARE signed. Size: 33.5 x 25cm. Bookseller Inventory # 001354
