First Edition. Screenwriter and director Robert Pirosh’s own copy of the 107 page shooting script for the historical drama,Valley of the Kings, based in large measure on the noted book on ancient Egypt, Gods, Graves and Scholars by C.W. Ceram. Hardbound in rich deep red leather with raised bands and the title gilt-stamped on the spine and cover as well as “ROBERT PIROSH” on the front board. Fine condition. Includes a DVD of the film. Robert Pirosh also directed and produced this film which starred Robert Taylor, Eleanor Parker, Carlos Thompson, Kurt Kasznar, Victor Jory, Leon Askin, and Aldo Silvani, and was shot entirely on location in various Egyptian settings, including Cairo, Luxor, and at the stunning Pyramids of Giza. The eleven black & white photos (all 8” x 10”) bound into the script show the principal cast members in various scenes from the film, with one showing a behind-the-scenes shot of Pirosh and several crew members filming a scene. The additional black & white photographs included as a group are of various sizes, ranging from 4 1/2” x 3 1/4” to 11 1/2” x 9”, and feature Pirosh in his role as director, giving guidance to the actors and the crew, with one amusing shot of some of the ‘harem’ ladies playing with Pirosh on a silk-swathed lounge. One of the photographs is a signed and inscribed portrait of the Italian actor Aldo Silvani who played Father Anthimos in the film, and reads in Silvani’s hand: “To my dear friend Robert Pirosh, Aldo Silvani, 13-11-54, Rome.” The story line of Valley of the Kings centers on the search for the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh, Ra-hotep, by a young woman (Parker) who is attempting to validate her late father’s claims that the Old Testament accounts of Joseph in Egypt are factual. She enlists the help of a handsome American archaeologist (Taylor), who is more than eager to lend a hand - as much for the adventure as in the chance to further his personal ambitions. The plot is complicated by mysterious opposition, with many ensuing twists and turns, not the least of which is a powerful attraction between Parker and Taylor. Much of the story is based upon the scholarly work of C.W. Ceram, whose classic book Gods, Graves and Scholars served as an important reference for Pirosh. The film is noteworthy for its attention to detail as it brings Hollywood and Egypt together for a terrific blend of exotic locale, high adventure, and romance. Robert Pirosh won a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 1950 for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay for the film Battleground, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay for the 1951 film Go for Broke! Some of Pirosh’s other films include the Marx Brothers film A Day at the Races, Hell is for Heroes, A Gathering of Eagles, etc. He also wrote for television, including such well-known series as Ironside, Bonanza, Mannix, Harry O, The Hardy Boys, Ellery Queen, The Waltons, and Combat.
