About this Item

Illustrations by Donald L. Dickson. Small 8vo. Red cloth. 138pp. Illustrations. Very good. Lacks dust jacket, else a tight and attractive early printing of Hersey's second book -- with superb, bold signature and inscription on front flyleaf: "For Jack Searles / with the hope that my / second-hand acquaintance / with you may be extended, / some day soon, into first-hand. / You have all done a very / wonderful job -- / John Hersey / May '43." John Malcolm Searles (1915-2013) commanded a PT-boat in the Pacific during World War Two, preying on Japanese destroyers and submarines; he was in charge of 500 men during the landing at Okinawa and lost not a single man, for which he was awarded the Navy Cross. Searles' blind-embossed name/city appear above Hersey's inscription. Bookseller Inventory # 38998
