About this Item

138 pages. From the dust jacket: " On the 8th of October I went down into a valley with Captain Charles Rigaud of the United States Marines. A small skirmish took place there. The valley was on Guadalcanal, but it might have been anywhere". These are the personal accounts of author John Hersey, as he accompanied the Marines into action on the island of Guadalcanal in October 1942. The action was possibly the Matinikau Offensive where the US 1/7, 2/7 and 3/2 Regiments crossed the Matinikau River 7-9 October 1942 to break up troop concentrations of the Japanese 4th Infantry Regiment in the hills west of Henderson Field. This was Hersey's second book. Worn chipped dust jacket now protected in mylar. Inventory #21-000412-0968. Bookseller Inventory # 000412
