About this title

A Novel of Redemption
This touching story is about a Vietnam Vet and a rescued dog who come together to not only change each other's lives, but a whole community. John Carrows suffers from PTSD and lives off the grid in self-imposed exile. Battling daily with violent war memories, he is forced out of hiding when pot-smoking teenagers make a failed attempt to rob him at gunpoint. Delinquent teens and the town's residents aren't prepared for the consequences. Sage, an abandoned dog, becomes the catalyst to heal John's deep psychological wounds. Saving Sage and nurturing her back to health, John emerges from years of recurring nightmares and deep depression--setting forth a chain of events that positively affect the entire community.

From the Author:

I wrote "VANILLA GRASS, a novel of redemption" about the challenges Veterans face with flashbacks and depression as part of their daily struggle with PTSD. Until recently, post deployment integration has offered little help readjusting after coming home from war. Thankfully that's beginning to change. Depression, drugs and alcohol abuse, domestic violence and at-risk teenagers are gritty themes I've also included. "VANILLA GRASS" shows the healing power of dogs for those struggling with PTSD when conventional attempts of therapy have failed. With their heightened senses of empathy and instinct, dogs are capable of bonding with humans to become their emotional healers. With this book I've attempted to raise awareness of the challenges our veterans and active military are coping with in their day-to-day lives. The story also exposes current problems with a fictitious group of at-risk teenagers who are promiscuous, talk slang, swear, smoke pot, rob houses, and have no goals. I've written how through example, the importance of community banding together to make a positive change in these kids' lives brings forth surprising results.
