About this Item

Philadelphia: Penn Publishing Company, 1916. Quarto, hardcover, original olive green publisher's cloth, ornately stamped in red and gold. 212 pages, indexed. Illustrated with 31 color plates after paintings by the author, depicting the town halls, cathedrals, towers and belfries, and other sites throughout Belgium. Inner hinge starting. A nearly fine copy of the First Edition. A beautiful book about the Belgian people and their architecture. Edwards spent much time in Belgium before World War I destroyed many of the sights depicted herein. In fact, the book was written as a celebration to the Belgian people, who suffered so greatly in that war. George Wharton Edwards (1859-1950) was an American portrait painter and muralist who became famous as a book illustrator, particularly of his own works of travel. Bookseller Inventory # 5221
