Book Description New York: The Macmillan Company, November 1931., 1931. VOLUME II ONLY of a two volume set. First edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). xii, 583 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 15.25cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth with bright gilt stamping to spine and front board; spine heel bumped as are board corners; remnants of old tape strips at top and bottom center of both boards with some associated impressions on front and rear free endpapers - usually indicative of a dj being taped down and thus probably once an institutional copy but there are no markings on initial or rear leaves reflecting that circumstance. Toning to edges; strong toning to rear endpapers; strong toning to pages 218-219 and 426-427 caused by some irrelevant and now removed newspaper clippings; many leaves remain uncut at their deckle fore-edges; indelicate separation of pages 67-70 caused tearing and slender chipping to fore-edge margin of pages 67-68 with the overlapping portion attached to 69-70. Binding is firm. Else a very good- copy. With a lagniappe of a bookseller ticket "Fountaine - Books | Grand Theatre Bldg. | Columbus 15, Ohio" affixed on rear pastedown. A well regarded historian in her own right who received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee in 1933, Eron Opha Moore Rowland (1861-1951) was the wife of noted Mississippi historian and author Dunbar Rowland (1864-1937) who served as the director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from its founding in 1902 till his death in 1937. Eron Rowland is best known as the first biographer of Varina Howell and for her 1926 book "Andrew Jackson's Campaign Against the British, or the Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812" also published by Macmillan. {Shelf #1}. Book Description New York: The Macmillan Company, November 1927., 1927. VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. First edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). xviii, 499 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 15.25cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth; spine surface heavily abraded with patches of underlying backstrip exposed additionally causing losses to spine's heavily dulled lettering; a few patches of mild surface abrasion/mottling to boards with corners nicked; front board's gilt stamping remains bright. Edges toned; small stains to top and bottom edges; deckle fore-edge. Strong toning to front and rear free endpapers with lighter toning to opposing pastedowns; past owner's name label on front free endpaper; uncommon Meridian, Mississippi bookseller ticket for Rosabel's Book Shop affixed at front pastedown's bottom right. Toning/foxing occurs mostly on pages opposite the book's b/w plates; a few instances of light soiling to interior leaves which, overall, remain clean. Binding shoed some slight stress between ffep and half-title and between pages 492-493 but otherwise firm. Only a good copy at best per the exterior cosmetics.
