About this Item

Octavo. 16pp. One of 300 copies. First edition of Bridges' poem, written to honor Emily Daniel, "In memory of the War-work done in the Provost's Lodgings at Worcester College, Oxford." In 1917, Mrs. Daniel invited members of the Oxford community to use the Provost's Lodgings at Worcester College for making bandages and other materials to aid in the war effort. Robert Bridges, then 73 years old, was a friend of Emily and her husband C. Henry Daniel, who was Provost at the College and proprietor of the Daniel Press, which had printed some of Bridges' poetry. After the war ended in 1919 and the depot closed, Bridges and the other workers presented Mrs. Daniel with a copy of William Blake's Lyrical Poems, bound up with a dedication leaf signed by the donors and a manuscript of verses written by Bridges. A facsimile of this manuscript, now held at the Worcester College Library, as well as a transcription and an Introduction by George Gordon, were printed on handmade paper for this first published edition of the poem. A receipt from the Daniel Press, signed by C. Henry Daniel and dated 1901 is laid in. Light fading to edges of book, else fine in blue boards backed in gilt-stamped white canvas. (McKay 78).
