Very scarce. 12mo. in original dark brown blindstamped cloth, spine stamped in gilt: "Vestiges Of Creation/ With A Sequel/ Second Ed." 303 pp. , folding chart. No statement or indication of edition on title page, the only indication being the spine imprint. A tight example, shallow strip of loss head of spine and shallow chipping foot of spine, some wear at tips. Some corner dampstaining to the rear free endpaper and to pp. 268-276. Robert Chambers was a 19th century Scottish geologist, evolutionist thinket and publisher who, along with his brother, was an important figure in the sciences in the mid 19th century. He published this work anonymously; it was at the time and for years afterward considered so controversial that authorship of it was not attributed to Chambers until after his death in 1871.
