Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) is an American artist whose work focused on the Mountain/Southwest and his in-law's farm in Kansas. He created more than 2,600 oil paintings, 500 watercolors, 207 lithographs, 94 blockprints and 27 drypoints. Critics compare his work to Van Gogh and Cezanne and he studied under Olof Erlandson, Anders Zorn, Richard Bergh and Per Hasselberg in Sweden before moving to Paris to work in Edmond François Aman-Jean's studio, a Symbolist and close associate of post-impressionist pointillist Georges Seurat. The popularity of Sandzen, and fellow Prairie Print Makers, paralleled the growth of America's Arts & Crafts movement where attributes of hand-craftsmanship and fine yet simple detail were highly regarded.
