312 pages inc the 2 appendices at the rear + 44 page publishers catalogue dated Oct 1885. The biography of a most unconventional CofE Vicar of Morwenstow in Devon. Riding around the parish in pink riding jackets and shocking the flock with outlandish sermons but causing no offence except to the prurient and charmless. More a narrative of Devon folk in the early 19th century to the last quarter. The Stowe ghost, the Bude Mermaid, The Mazed Pigs, Nanny heal and the Potatoes, The Yellow Poncho, Objection to Hysterical Religion, Hunting The Devil, Cheated by a Tramp, etc, etc. A lovely read about this larger than life character, some mild religious content, with a sprinkling of country-folk irreverence and indulgence. A classic work by this Devon writer. Maroon cloth, with uncut edges, sunned across top edge and spine, gilt titles on spine faded with some light wear head and tail of spine.charcoal endpapers with an 1886 insc in ink to recto of endpaper, "E Adrian Woodruffe-Peacock? Harrington, Northampton. 3-7-86" (possibly the early ecologist and Lincolnshire historian). Contents about VG.
