About this Item

In French. xxi, 308 pages. The pages are very clean, are yellowed with occasional foxing, are still crisp, and are tightly bound. There is a little pencilling in the margins with a newspaper poem clipping on the back inner cover. The first 15 or so leaves have a small closed tear in the edge. Bound in plain, 1/2 black leather, with 4 double gilt lines crossing the spine, with well attached, but slightly cracked covers. Still bright gilt lettering on the spine. A little rubbing to the ends of the spine, with the covers having very good, unworn and unbumped edges. This book belonged to Ernest Howard Crosby, whose bookplate from his Alexandria Egypt years is on the front inner cover. "Ernest H. Crosby - Juge aux Tribunaux Mixtes d'Egypte - Alexandrie". Mr. Crosby has also inscribed the half-title page - "Ernest H. Crosby, Alexandrie, le 17 mars, 1891"; and further down the page - "le dimanche, le 29 mars, 1891". Ernest H. Crosby was a New York attorney and social reformer. He authored "The Real White Man's Burden" plus a book on Tolstoy, among other works. In 1889 he was appointed by Pres. Harrison to head the International Tribunal at Alexandria, Egypt, also approved by the Khedive of Egypt. Upon leaving his office in 1894, he visited Tolstoy in Russia before returning to New York, which was a major influence in his reform attempts in the U.S. Bookseller Inventory # 12320
