About this Item

Steel printing plate (7 1/16 x 9 3/4 inches), with engraved image (5 3/16 x 8 1/8 inches), above lettered title 'View of New Orleans Early Nineteenth Century' with no engraver or publisher's name. A fascinating example of an original printing plate engraved with a wonderful view of early-nineteenth century New Orleans from the Mississippi The present image shows Jackson Square in New Orleans in its ante-bellum heyday, viewed from the Mississippi. A number of ships ply to and fro, including an early example of a paddle-boat powered by steam. The phrase 'early nineteenth century' suggests that the plate should be dated to at least the middle of the century. A 'circa 1850' date seems likely as steel-engraving as a method of illustration for topographical works was already on the wane by the late 1850s. Bookseller Inventory # 9467
