About this Item

Frontispiece drawing of Taylor. Original cloth, gilt boarder on covers and on spine, boards rubbed; birthday presentation on first blank, 2-page publisher's advertisements on last two leaves. Generally an excellent copy. Later edition (1st 1846) of a record of the author's wanderings throughout Europe in which he reflects upon all manner of people and places. Taylor spent two years traveling to the principle places of interest in Europe, and according to his preface, enjoyed her grandest scenery and the marvels of ancient and modern art, became familiar with other languages, other customs and other institutions.Taylor (1825-1878) was an American poet and travel writer. This was his second work after publishing a book of poems two years earlier. He has an interesting California connection - - Taylor was 24 years old when he left New York for California with a shipload of forty-niners seeking gold. He was a reporter on assignment from Horace Greeley's New York Tribune. It was Greeley who said "Go West, young man. Go West." Arriving in San Francisco at the height of the gold rush Taylor saw the effects of gold on business and society. He visited all the camps and towns with his picturesque descriptions of life and the fortunes being made. In addition, he visited Monterey and witnessed the state constitutional convention.
