About the Author: Nathaniel Pitt Langford (1832-1911), born and raised in New York, arrived in Bannack, Montana in 1862 as a member of James L. Fisk's Minnesota wagon train. He removed to Virginia City in 1863 and became the federal Collector of Internal Revenue with the creatio of Montana Territory in 1864. In 1869 president U.S. Grant tried to appoint Langfor the governor of Montana Territory but the Senate would not approve that nomination. He was appointed, in 1872, the Bank Examiner for the Western Territories and Pacific States. In 1870 Langfor joined the Washburn-Doane Expedition to the Yellowstone Wonderland. This group sparked the movementfor the creation of Yellowstone National Park, and Langford also served as the reserve's first Superintendent. Langford's telling of the 1862-1866 Montana Vigilante story becomes particularly important because the author was a player.
