Full title: VILLAGE DIALOGUES, BETWEEN FARMER LITTLEWORTH, THOMAS NEWMAN, REV. MR. LOVEGOOD, AND OTHERS. BY REV. ROWLAND HILL, A.M. FROM THE EIGHTEENTH LONDON EDITION, WITH ADDITIONAL DIALOGUES. IN THREE VOLUMES. [VOL. I. VOL. II. VOL. III.] EMBELLISHED WITH VIGNETTES. Collates: [fp], [ffep], [frontis], [Vol. I title leaf], [Contents leaf], [plate], [ix], x-xii, , 14-28, [plate], , 30-188, [plate], 189-296, [Vol. II title leaf], [Contents leaf], , 6-40, [plate], 41-74, [plate], 75-92, [plate], 93-108, [plate], 109-234, [plate], 235-316, [Vol. III title], [Contents leaf], , 6-32, [plate], 33-42, [plate], 43-194, [plate], 195-300, [rear fly], [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 11.5cm. Full calf leather binding; spine shows some surface charring with associated peeling and chipping and some loss at ends, relatively modern glue repairs evident at splitting joints and at chipped dark red title label which has gold paint substituting for initial "V" letter in title ("illage Dialogues" is still original gilt) and paint dabbed in to emulate left side of gilt floral bar at top of label. Boards scuffed with worn gilt tooling along edges, slender embossed lines for borders on both boards with gilt tooling at each corner. Small blue rectangular bindery ticket at front pastedown's top left corner: "E. Hopkins, | Book-Binder, | Lyons, N.Y." Each title page shares same 1825 imprint and at top margins has antiquarian ink signature "C.D. Wright" with fractional lettering loss indicating that E. Hopkins trimmed the leaves when converting the books from a triple-decker to a single volume. Style and appearance indicate Hopkins' binding probably dates from 1830s to 1840s. E. Hopkins is not cited in AMERICAN SIGNED BINDINGS THROUGH 1876 by Willman Spawn and Thomas E. Kinsella. Binder instructions for each volume's plates (specified upon versos of Contents pages) indicate several discrepancies: Volume I has three of four as specified but lacks plate opposite page 21 and instead has plate opposite page [ix] featuring a captioned title not specified for any plate in entire book; Volume II calls for seven plates but only has five (missing opposite page 145 and 295); and Volume III should only have two plates but has a third plate opposite page 42 again with a title not specified anywhere else (i.e. not one of the missing Vol. II plates). Foxing and toning to interior leaves with a few top corners creased from fold-ins. Text block still firm. Seller Inventory # D17-6656
