About this Item

Full title: A Vindication of the Doctrine of the Holy and Ever Blessed Trinity, and the Incarnation of the Son of God. Occasioned by the brief notes on the Creed of St. Athanasius and the brief history of the Unitarians of Socinians; and containing an answer to both. Bound with: Tritheism Charged upon Dr. Sherlock's New Notion of the Trinity. Vindication Printed for W. Rogers. London: 1694. Stated third edition. Tritheism Printed for John Whitlock. London: 1695. Full leather. Gilt ruling on the spine. 272, 316 pp. Two works addressing opposite sides of an English theological debate surrounding the Socinian argument and the doctrine of the trinity, with Sherlock taking a Trinitarian Anglican position. Robert South provides an anonymous attack of his position, criticizing not only his theology but his career and writing. Both Sherlock and South were English church men, with both writing several works addressing the Socinian controversy (see Wikipedia for previous information). With the armorial bookplate of William van Mildert, perhaps the Bishop of Durham in the early 1800s, as well as one of the founders of the University of Durham. FAIR condition, ex-theological library. Spine label, minor stamping and oval embossing throughout, with a few stray library notations also present. Both hinges CRACKED and separating, with the covers somewhat tenuously holding on to the text block. Leather browned and cracking along the extremities. Minor scuffing and uneven fading. Leather very browned, cracked and brittle along the spine, with some flaking and loss, especially at the head and tail. Another previous owner's bookplate also present, with extensive ink notes, in a tiny script on the first and last endpapers. Text block solid, with minor scattered soiling and foxing. Uneven browning to the paper. ESTC R34260. Bookseller Inventory # 008007
