Synopsis: Violet's Flight about the escape from Burma of tens of thousands over the Himalayas to India at the time of the Japanese invasion in 1942, the war and occupation in Burma from the perspective not just of the Burmese, but of Japanese officers and the clandestine forces. It concludes with the assassination of Aung San which led to the Burma of today. Much of it is told from the viewpoint of Violet and her father Aloysius Nicholas. Violet lived her last years in Simcoe. Before she died she left her remembrances of growing up in Burma with David Beasley.
About the Author: David Richard Beasley was born in Hamilton Ontario Canada. After graduating from McMaster University in Arts and Sciences, he lived in Europe for five years teaching, writing, traveling. He came to New York City in 1958, taught in Grace Church School, earned an MLS, worked as research librarian in the New York Public Research Libraries and formed the union of library workers, experiences which gave him the inspiration for his detective novels The Jenny and The Grand Conspiracy and for his How To Use a Research Library [Oxford UP]. He continued to write books and studied political economics at the New School for Social Research where he earned a PhD. He and his wife, Violet, who was a professor of English Literature, retired to Simcoe, Ontario in 1992 where he writes and publishes books, both fiction and non-fiction, from his company Davus Publishing.
