Uncolored engraving, sold by Mount and Page, London, ca. 1689-1705. Sheet size: 21 7/8 x 33". Inventory#: p327pmat. An important early navigational chart of the Chesapeake Bay. The principal chart used aboard merchant vessels plying the waters of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries was John Thornton and William Fisher's Virginia, Pennsilvania, East & West New Jersey. Water depths are depicted as are such hazards to navigation as shoals and sandbars. Based closely on the earlier map by Augustine Herrman, Thornton and Fisher's chart was published between 1689 and 1794 in thirty-seven editions of The English Pilot, The Fourth Book. This popular atlas of American waters was the fourth of five volumes that made up The English Pilot, the first great English sea atlas. The soundings and shoals in the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays and along the coast differ from those supplied by Herrman. From a historical point of view this is perhaps the most useful and valuable map of the area published between the Herrman of 1673 and the Fry & Jefferson of 1751. Since it is a composite rather than a prototype map it is not accorded the same status as the Herrman. Nevertheless, it supplies so much more data than that map that is of greater value to the historians. 0. Bookseller Inventory # 000327
