This is the story of Yukiko Sugihara, the Japanese Consul who was personally responsible for the rescue of more than 6,000 Jews from Poland. Against the instructions of his government, Sugihara issued visas allowing Polish Jews to escape to safety in Russia and Japan. His own family was interned at the end of the war by the Russians, and the Japanese government dismissed him from the foreign service. More than 40,000 descendants of the survivors are alive today as a testimony to Sugihara's courage. This work was prepared for the Holocaust Oral History Project and is a pre-publication copy of the 55th Anniversary Commemorative Edition. There are numerous photographs throughout the text.
