About this Item

In Three Parallel Texts. Edited from Numerous Manuscripts, with Preface, Notes, and a Glossary by the Rev. Walter W. Skeat. Oxford and London (1924). Two volumes, octavo, original gilt-stamped black cloth. Pp. 628, 484, indexed. Spine tops chipped, but overall a bright set in very good condition. In 1866 Skeat published his "Parallel Extracts from 29 MSS. of Piers Plowman" (No. 17 of the Original Series of the Early English Text Society), in which he was the first to show that there were three distinct versions of the poem. A complete description of these texts, an account of the author's life, a history of criticisms of the poem, extensive notes, and an index comprise the entire contents of Volume Two.
