Book Description University Press of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, 1969. Hardbound. Turquoise cloth/boards with gold decoration; blue cloth spine with gilt lettering. Cream, color-illus. dj with black lettering. 138 pp. with 18 b/w and 12 color illustrations. With a foreword by Frank H. Sommer and appendices: Shaker Organization and Chronology; and Check List of Shaker Inspirational Drawings. A pioneering work on the study of Shaker art, the Andrews' book was published for The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum by the University Press of Virginia. "In the 1930s, Shaker historian Edward Deming Andrews was shown a "gift" drawing, a drawing done after a religious vision, during a visit to a Shaker community. He was astonished because the religious order was known for its emphasis on simplicity and avoidance of decoration. "[W]e did not know, after 10 years' acquaintance with this secluded folk," Andrews wrote decades later, "that they ever attempted to depict the signs and objects of the spiritual world." Forgotten or hidden since their heyday in the mid-19th century, other drawings were eventually uncovered. In 1969 the first book on the subject, "Visions of the Heavenly Sphere: A Study in Shaker Religious Art" by Andrews and his wife, Faith, was published, showing that there was more to Shaker culture than elegantly spare furnishings and oval boxes." - from the LA Times - Most of the designs exhibit a religious love for nature and an inclination to see the world in a strict and orderly fashion. The symbols are arranged to communicate specific messages. The drawings reveal the heart of the folk, and trees, flowers and fruits were some of their favorite symbols. Includes a chronology and bibliography. VG+/Good (Clean, bright, and tight; dj age toned at spine, with wear to head of spine and light shelf soiling). Bookseller Inventory # 26216
