First edition. Square 8vo. in dark green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt; all edges gilt; 175 pps. Illustrated throughout with photographs. Description of late 19th century journey by the author and his wife and sons (in itself unuaual as women rarely travelled the area) through the ancinet region of bashan. Bashan, often mentione din the Bible, was one of the three ancient divisions of Palestine, and one of King Solomon's geopolitical districts. In more modern times, it was part of Syria until 1967 and encompasses the Golan Heights. A tight copy, all gilt still fairly bright. Deaccessioned from a free library in Baltimore with their bookplate on the front pastedown and small oval stamp on title page and reverse sides of full page plates; evidence of small label removal on spine. A scarce title in its original edition, it was reprinted in paperback in 2007. Bookseller Inventory # E4835
