About this Item

Pp. viii, 337, (24). Publisher's original dark brown cloth, spine with printed author/title label, 8vo. This is the first American edition. The German naturalist and evolutionist traveled to Ceylon in 1881-1882. There he made many observations on the flora and fauna of the island (with new species described), as well as its local human inhabitants. The book begins with Haeckel observations of the natural history of India where he began his travels. Mildly ex-library from the Hampton Library on Long Island. The title page and a few other pages bear the oval name stamp of the Hampton Library and a withdrawn stamp on the front endpaper. Label on spine has been removed leaving only a faint trace, minor shelf wear to cloth, contents are bright and clean with few signs of use; a tight, very good copy. Bookseller Inventory # 5142
