About this Item

(METASTASIO, PIETRO). Vita del Signor Abate Pietro Metastasio poeta cesareo. Naples: Luigi Migliaccio, 1787. 12mo. 4, 354 p. Port. (trimmed and pasted to free endpaper). Contemporary vellum. Moderate foxing, vellum a bit soiled, else a very good copy. Biography of Pietro Metastasio (1698- 1782). Metastasio, the son of a papal soldier and pork-butcher, was notably unsuccessful until his hobby of writing poetry came to the attention of the viceroy of Naples. His skill, especially at writing drama, then led to his quick rise, and he was appointed Imperial Poet in 1730. Among his many works the Clemenza di Tito is probably best-known as the basis of Mozart's opera. Bookseller Inventory # 12117
