About this Item

Bound in red cloth with titles in gilt (spine) and black (cover). Corresponding 1889 dates to the title and copyright pages; no additional printings. Inscribed, signed and dated Dec. 13, 1895 by the translator Olson on the second blank, otherwise unmarked. The book was gifted to Madison journalist Albert O. Barton (who later co-wrote Rasmus Anderson's autobiography), and a letter to Barton's father, Ole, in Norwegian, from pastor Theo Kleppe (with his signature) is laid in. (Actually, this letter appears to have originally been three pages; only pages one and three are now present.) Both maps present and attached at the endpapers, with the rear map a bit creased from having been slightly misfolded for many years. Rear hinge cracked but holding; the front is solid. Spine foxed with the lettering near the head obscured. The cloth shows light edgewear. Olson was Professor of Scandinavian Languages at the University of Wisconsin - Madison for many years, and brother-in-law of Rasmus Anderson, his predecessor in the chair. An interesting signed copy with the Barton association. Bookseller Inventory # 124298
