Practically all cultures, either primitive or advanced, have until recently assumed that passions, motility, sensations and intellectual activity were localized in the great viscerae contained in the thoracic cavity or in the upper part of the abdomen. For the Egyptians, emotional life was located in the lungs, and intrinsically related to respiration; for the ancient Hebrews, it was located in the blood and central circulatory organs. The Greeks of the Homeric epoch placed it both in the heart and the diaphragm. Aristoteles, Zenon, Epicureus and other Greek philosophers placed all sensations, passions and intellectual activity in the cardiac viscera which they understood as a "sensorium comune". In fact, the location of the heart in the middle of the organism, slightly above the center and slightly forward, seems to indicate to man its great functional importance. 11 is the "acropolis of the body" and exerts an intellectual attraction as the probable center for mental and emotional activity. It is an organ which "feels", changes its pace and force and projects itself into our conscience when we love, fear, desire, suffer or rejoice. The brain, on the other hand, performs its functions silently, secretly hidden in its bony case. It seems insensible to physical and spiritual stimulation and its real identity remains concealed inside the cranium. Thus, even now, with all our neurophysiological knowledge, poets and singers insist on making us love and hate with that romantic pump, and refuse to mention our hypothalamus in their antiquated verse.
