About this Item

[36], 624 pp. 5.75 inches, 13 cm, tall. An anthology of verse from the Renaissance (the sixteenth century), some writers now obscure, others still well-known (Castiglione, della Casa, Annibal Caro). Lodovico Dolce (1508 - 1568) was a Venetian poet, playwright, translator and versatile belletrist known for his prolific and varied writings. Nonetheless relatively little is known about the details of his life. It is believed that he was sympathetic to Reformation thought, which established quite a strong toehold in the mid-16th century Venice he inhabited. Dolce's publisher, Gabriele Giolito, in fact, was at the forefront of this movement, and it is from the tight collaboration between the two that Dolce's own propensities have been inferred. Widely regarded as a man of extraordinary erudition, Dolce was unquestionably an important literary figure of his day, as exemplified by his contributions to various editions of Aristo, Bembo, and others, not to mention his own works, yet it seems that he is one with most writers in having failed to earn a fortune from his prodigious legacy. This is a lovely copy, bound in full vellum, with gauffawed edges and hand-tooled tulips beneath the gilt. While a second volume was issued to the anthology a year later, the two are seldom found together and this work should be seen as a standalone volume and is NOT part of a broken set. The velllum does have soilage but has held up very well generally-speaking. The leaves also have some light scattered soilage but are overall clean. A lovely copy. Bookseller Inventory # 001330

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
