Inked name on half title page: William Shack (1923-2000), professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, and dean emeritus of the graduate division. A prominent scholar of African cultures, Shack was known internationally for his pioneering fieldwork on the Gurage people of Ethiopia and for a series of books on African society. No other markings in book. Very lightly read if read at all. Henry Salt (1780-1827) was an English artist, traveler, diplomat, and Egyptologist. Salt explored the Red Sea area, and in 1805 visited the Ethiopian highlands. Upon returning, he wrote this book. 506pp. Bookseller Inventory # 3004004
